As the need for electricity increases in the Lakes Region, so does the need to improve distribution to residential and business customers. As a result, Central Maine Power Co. will turn power off early Sunday morning so workers can rebuild part of the electricity delivery system.

An army of 60 utility workers in about 30 Central Maine Power bucket trucks will be working from midnight to 6 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 23. To complete the work, the company will disrupt power to about 4,870 customers in Casco, Harrison, Naples, Otisfield, and Sebego for about six hours overnight.

“We have built a new circuit to serve residential and commercial growth in the area, and crews will be working through the night to transfer customers to this new circuit. At the same time, they’ll be performing some preventative maintenance on other parts of the power system in the area,” said CMP spokesman John Carroll. “We appreciate customers’ understanding as our crews work through the night to complete this project.”

The affected circuits are fed from the utility’s Raymond substation. Earlier this year, crews completed a major expansion at the facility, adding a new transformer, two new breakers, a capacitor bank, and communications equipment that allows additional remote monitoring and control capabilities.

“These are among many enhancements CMP is making to the power grid this year to keep it robust and able to meet customers’ needs well into the future,” adds Carroll. “In addition to improving power reliability in the area, these changes will provide for better switching between circuits. So if an outage does occur, it will likely be shorter in duration.”

Power will be disrupted shortly after midnight, and is expected to be restored by 6 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 23. In case of inclement weather, the work will be completed the following Sunday, Sept. 30.
