From coffee cans on variety store counters to the roadside signs, a show of support for 13-year-old Jordan Emerson can be seen all over Windham, silently pledging hope and encouragement for the recovery of the young girl.

Emerson remains in a drug-induced coma after crashing her car into the wall at Beech Ridge Motor Speedway in Scarborough on Aug. 8 during a children’s racing series for ages 8 to 15. Her family is not commenting on her condition.

Several fundraisers to benefit the Emerson family are planned throughout the month.

A car wash is being held this Saturday, Sept. 8, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Gateway Auto Sales at 696 Stroudwater St. in Westbrook. In addition to donations from the car wash, all money collected for oil changes and state inspections that day will go to the Emerson family. For more information, call 856-7200.

There will be a Walk for Jordan on Sunday, Sept. 9 at the Beech Ridge Motor Speedway from 12 to 3 p.m. Suggested donations are $5 and participants will walk the track as a sign of support for Emerson.

A second Walk for Jordan will be held at the Windham High School track on Sunday, Sept. 16 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. There will be also be a silent auction, raffle tickets and snack bar to raise money for the Emerson family. Light blue support bracelets will also be on sale, embedded with “Believe JBE” for Jordan Bea Emerson.

“Jordan’s just a great person, and it’s great to see the whole community supporting her and her family,” said organizer Paula Pock. Pock taught health and physical education last year at Windham Middle School and had Emerson as a student.

The cost is $5 to enter and there will be prizes for the different age groups. For more information write to Paulapock@hotmail.com.

A chicken barbecue is planned for Saturday, Sept. 29 from 4-7 p.m. at the Windham Middle School. The price is $8 per person and attendees are asked to bring a dessert.

The barbecue will also feature a silent auction of donated items, which include a handmade quilt, gift certificates to local businesses, and autographed NASCAR items. All proceeds will go to the Emerson family.

“We’re hoping that quite a few Windham residents will be there,” said Gail Cardner, who is organizing the barbecue event along with Windham Town Councilor Carol Waig. Cardner can be reached at 893-0450 and Waig can be reached at 239-1917.
