Long, strange piece of history

1 min read

I want to thank the Current newspaper and their courageous, fine writers for reporting on the goings on of the South Portland government.

What a long strange piece of history these last eight months have been, thankfully culminating in the resignation, finally, of the former city manager, Thaddeus Jankowski.

But not without tremendous bruising to our way of life, our sense of right and wrong, loss of long-time key personal and, at the end, a totally unnecessary payout, to the tune of $43,600. This in spite of a contract stipulation that, if Jankowski resign, the city is obligated to pay out $7,500.

“What were the city leaders thinking?” one has to ask. As a team, manager Jankowski and Mayor Claude Morgan went after long-time city attorney Mary Kahl, and fought hard against the Freedom of Information Act.

Thaddeus Jankowski should never have been hired by the city. Anyone with access to a computer could Google Jankowski’s name and look at his terrible employment record. South Portland is not the first to have a lot of trouble with him and have a cash payoff. South Portland just happens to have paid him much more than other, larger cities.

This whole thing has been a textbook example of how not to run a city.
