Westbrook will receive a $10,000 grant from the Maine Arts Commission.

Without remarks, the Westbrook City Council approved acceptance of the Building Capacity in Maine’s Cultural Communities grant at its meeting Monday. Members of the city’s Arts and Culture Committee will work with Erik Carson, community and economic development director, to develop a program for the money.

The Arts and Culture Committee will likely be discussing the grant at its meeting on June 14. One goal the grant could fund would be creation of a nonprofit arts agency in the city, Carson said.

Committee members will likely be hiring a consultant to help them work through strategic planning of building Westbrook’s art community and resources.

Carson said the consultant could also help identify strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and challenges within the city’s arts community.
