Nick DiFiore of Windham has advanced to next week’s Round of 40 in the boys state tennis tournament thanks to some fine play last Saturday in the opening matches. The Round of 40 begins Friday, May 25, at Bates College in Lewiston.

DiFiore entered play as the No. 19 seed and he topped Calvin Chicoine of North Yarmouth Academy in the first round of play (8-5). He then defeated Jameson Ring of Poland in the qualifying round by a straight set score of 6-0, 6-0.

The Eagles had a couple of other competitors in last week’s event. Adam Mitchell and Dan McGovern both participated in the annual playoff to see who will be crowned the 2007 Maine schoolboy champion.

The Bonny Eagle contingent included Andrew Bingham, Nathan Hanley, and Darren Choate.

On the girls side, it was 17th seed Nicole Willey moving into the Round of 40 with impressive wins against Britta Olsen of Hall-Dale (8-0) and Libby Johnston of Gorham (6-1, 6-1).

Jenna Willey of Windham got past Becca Irwin of Monmouth (8-1) before she was eliminated from the tourney field with a 6-1, 6-0 loss to fourth-seeded Lauren Coupal of York. And Eagles teammate Stacey Niedorada of Windham lost her first round match to Dorothea Crowley of South Portland (8-6).

Karli Kesson of Bonny Eagle won her first round match by a 9-7 score before falling to Melissa Slack of Cape Elizabeth (6-1, 6-0) in the qualifying round of the competition.
