Roger Mosley, Public Works Director of Standish, was honored for his contributions to recycling with the 2007 eco-Excellence Award given by ecomaine, a nonprofit organization owned and operated by 21 municipalities in southern Maine.

Mosley was nominated by Janice Southard, public works secretary, who said, “each year during Maine Recycles Week, Roger personally goes to every elementary school classroom to talk about the importance of recycling.”

As part of his Maine Recycles Week program, Mosley invites all Standish K-5 elementary students to participate in a poster contest for the purpose of creating a calendar called “Recycle Standish!” He asks each student to draw a picture about recycling and selects two from each grade level, thereby ensuring one from each school for the 12 months.

In addition, a 13th drawing is selected for the cover. Each selected picture is printed in full color on 100 percent recycled paper identified with the student’s name, grade, school, and teacher. Mosley also includes the names of every participating student, their grades, schools, and teachers.

Mosley attended a luncheon held by ecomaine to honor the winners from all participating municipalities, at which each received a framed certificate and soft fleece jacket made from recycled plastic bottles.

The 28 communities eligible to participate in the annual eco-Excellence Awards for recycling are: Baldwin, Bridgton, Cape Elizabeth, Casco, Cumberland, Falmouth, Freeport, Gorham, Gray, Harrison, Hiram, Hollis, Limington, Lyman, Naples, North Yarmouth, Ogunquit, Parsonsfield, Porter, Portland, Pownal, Saco, Scarborough, South Portland, Standish, Waterboro, Windham, and Yarmouth.
