Here is school teacher Abbie Cartland with a group of pupils at the old Ireland school. None of these students has been identified, so if readers recognize anyone, kindly contact Kay Soldier. In East Windham, there is a neighborhood historically called “Little Ireland,” in the area where Nash Road and Falmouth Road intersect. In 1840, the 20 families who lived in the area had 65 “scholars” attending the one-room Ireland schoolhouse on the upper end of Nash Road, a building described as suitable for 32 students. A new school was built on the corner of Nash and Falmouth Roads, and burned about 1900. The third Ireland school (shown here) was built and closed in 1944. The community used the old school for a variety of groups and in the early 1950s, it also burned. (Photo from the archives of Windham Historical Society)
