According to Windham Deputy Fire Chief John Wescott, the fire that destroyed a home in Windham earlier this week is still under investigation with no known cause at this time.
“It was a total loss. Seventy-five percent of it was gone when we arrived. I couldn’t tell you what the house looked like,” Wescott said.
The fire occurred at 41 Dutton Hill Road during the windy and wet Patriot’s Day storm. The call came in at 2:43 a.m. Wescott said no one was hurt in the blaze. The family was out of state on vacation, Wescott said.
According to Windham’s tax assessment database, the house was built in 2003. The two-story single family home was owned by Stephen Newcomb, who bought the house in 2005. Newcomb could not be reached for comment by deadline.
Deputy Chief Wescott said the blaze took firefighters from Windham and six surrounding towns more than four hours to extinguish. With no fire hydrants within range of fire hoses, tankers had to shuttle water from a nearby duck pond located alongside Dutton Hill Road.
According to Wescott, town fire departments from Gray, Cumberland, Falmouth and New Gloucester provided tanker trucks at the scene of the blaze. Gorham provided a squad and engine and covered the South Windham fire station. Raymond covered the North Windham station.
