A Morgan horse named Rohan Ithilien, whose owner lives in Raymond, was recently honored with the Individually Owned Therapy Horse of the Year Award at the American Morgan Horse Association’s annual convention in Atlanta, Ga.

The annual award honors an outstanding registered Morgan horse that has contributed above and beyond expectations as a therapy horse.

Rohan Ithilien is a 23-year-old black mare, owned by Jackie Guiseley of Raymond. “Tilly,” as the horse is nicknamed, is used for Guiseley’s lessons and occasional shows.

“She has a very generous personality, ears always up and ready to give 100 percent,” Guiseley said.

At their first Special Olympics event in Skowhegan, Jackie and Tilly won several blue ribbons. When another rider at the show had trouble with her horse, Tilly filled in. She never blinked when they placed the unique, specially-designed saddle on her back and went in the ring. It was like the young woman had been riding her for years.

Founded in 1909, the American Morgan Horse Association is a nonprofit organization serving more than 50,000 Morgan horse owners, breeders, exhibitors and enthusiasts throughout the United States. AMHA serves as a parent organization to more than 90 recognized Morgan horse clubs and national service organizations.
