The Windham Parks and Recreation Department will hold a public forum in two weeks concerning a planned community park.

Windham residents who attend the meeting on Thursday, March 1, at the Windham Middle School cafeteria will learn details of the planned park and have a chance to ask questions or make comments. The meeting will start at 7:30 p.m. and last an hour.

The park, which would be located near the Windham Public Safety Building on Route 202, would need to be approved by the Windham Town Council. Council discussions on the park could begin next month. At present, there is no estimate on how much the park would cost. Park planners said private donations could help pay for the park.

Speaking at the meeting will be Brian Ross and Lynn Morrell of the Windham Parks and Recreation Department and Windham police officer Matthew Cyr, who is in charge of the Windham Skate Park. Morrell has worked at the skate park since 2000 and has watched the adjacent land sit idle.

“I’ve always thought that land could be used for something like this. When Brian (Ross) came in, I guess he liked the idea and is seeing what we can do,” Morrell said.

The park would surround the skate park next to the public safety building on Route 202. If approved, it would include areas for walking, BMX bikes, dogs and picnic lunches and an expanded skate park area, according to Morrell.

The park was designed by Sebago Technics civil engineering firm. Kylie Mason is in charge of the project. Morrell said Mason is expected to be at the public meeting.
