The Westbrook boys’ swim team finished second in the North Division Southwestern swimming and diving championship Friday at Davan pool.

Westbrook finished with 232 points. Greely won the championship with 244 while Scarborough was third with 229.

The Blue Blazes were seeded fourth going into the meet.

“We had some strong swims from our mid-level swimmers who were able to move up and really propel us to get second.” said Westbrook coach Dana Barrows.

Matt Violette finished first in the 200 and 500-yard freestyle events. Also placing in the 500 were Violette’s teammates, freshman Derek Hawkes and Kalin Lancaster, who finished third and sixth respectively.

Westbrook also placed three swimmers in the 100 freestyle. Sophomore Kyle Goan took first while Hawkes and Lancaster were third and sixth again. Goan also placed second on the 50 free.

Also performing well were Jacob Wilson in the 200 individual medley (third-place), freshman Keegan Goan in the 100 backstroke (fourth) and one-meter diving (fifth) and Jacob Wilson who finished third in the 100 butterfly.

Nicholas Adriance finished eighth in both the 100 butterfly and backstroke events.

Westbrook also placed well in the relays, taking third in the 200 medley relay, fourth in the 200 freestyle relay and first in the 400 freestyle relay, ensuring a second place finish over Scarborough.

Westbrook had swimmers that could compete with anyone in the league, but a lack of depth prevented them from taking first. Greely brought approximately 35 swimmers to the meet while the Blue Blazes had only 12.

“Before the meet I told the kids not to be disappointed,” Barrows said. “They are used to being up there as far as events go, but the results from a meet like this usually aren’t to a smaller team’s advantage.”

The state meet could be different. Westbrook qualified 11 of its 12 swimmers for the Class A state meet Feb. 20 at Bowdoin College.

“We are trying to chase down the state title,” Barrows said. “It will be interesting. At the very worst we’ll be top-three. We are able to show up and almost even the score as far as depth goes.”

The Westbrook girls finished with 51 points in their championship on Saturday.

The Blue Blazes’ top finishers included Stephanie Lamson who finished eighth in both the 100 backstroke and Kelly Smith with 10th-place finishes in the 50 and 500 freestyle.

Westbrook finished seventh in the 200 medley and 200 freestyle relays and eighth in the 400 freestyle relay.

“The girls did great as well,” Barrows said. “They really pushed hard and were able to set a lot of (personal records).”

The girls’ state meet is Feb. 19 at Bowdoin College.
