Wondering what to do over winter break? Tired of sitting indoors? Enjoy free hands-on activities designed for students in grades 4 through 6 at the Sebago Lake Ecology Center. The series of treks is sponsored by the Portland Water District. Each activity will focus on the natural environment in winter. The series includes the following events:
Monday, Feb. 19: Wildlife Tracking
Learn about different track types and patterns made by local wildlife. We’ll take a snowshoe trek on the Sebago Lake Wetland Loop trail to identify different visitors of the forest by the tracks they leave behind. Each student will make their own plaster animal track to take home with them.
Wednesday, Feb. 21: Winter Tree ID
We’ll head back to the Sebago Lake Ecology Center’s Wetland Loop Trail to learn how to identify different tree and shrub species. While snowshoeing around the area, we’ll learn how plants adapt to winter’s harsh environment. After the trek we will return to the center where each student will create their own handmade paper.
Friday, Feb. 23: Winter animal habitats and adaptations
We’ll explore different adaptations birds use to survive the harsh winters of New England. We’ll also learn how different species come alive at night and, by dissecting owl pellets, we can identify their prey. We’ll make bird feeders out of recycled materials and suet feeders.
This free event is suggested for fourth through sixth graders. Refreshments and snacks will be provided but please bring a lunch. The programs are mainly outside, so proper outerwear is suggested. Bring your snowshoes or cross-country skis. The Sebago Lake Ecology Center is located at the intersection of Routes 237 and 35 in Standish.
