The Bonny Eagle wrestling team enjoys a strong tradition and is a force to be reckoned with every year. At last weekend’s Southern Maine Classic tournament, the Scots showed once again they are a team to be watched at this weekend’s regional.

Dalton Groeger was the Scots only first place finisher, but he wasn’t the only Scot to get a top-six finish. Groeger earned his first title in the 103 pound weight class with a win over Massabesic’s Gage DeRosier.

The Scots had three other wrestlers who were finalists, but were unable to defeat their championship round opponents.

Maxwell Dunzik earned a second place in the 135 pound division when he was defeated by Noble’s Peter Bronder. Stephen Martin was also a second place finsher for the Scots. He earned the honor in the 152 pound class when he fell to Marshwood’s Jon Hussey in the finals. And Bonny Eagle’s other second place finisher was Daniel Avery at 285 pounds. Avery was beaten by Corey Holland of Massabesic.

Jared Stiles gathered a win in his final match for a fifth place finish in the 140 pound weight class. He defeated Noble’s Ben Lewis 8-6. Rounding out Bonny Eagle’s top-six finishers was Joseph Layte at 171 pounds. He lost to Thornton Academy’s Mark Reaser.

The Scots will be among the teams at Sanford High School this Saturday competing in the Western Maine Class A Regional Tournament. The tournament begins at 9:30 am.
