A very belated thank you for the excellent article about the South Portland Food Cupboard (Dec. 28, 2006). You accurately portrayed the cupboard for what we have and are striving to accomplish. The pictures were also wonderful and to have this article be on the front page was certainly a plus for us. I also believe the highlight box (about how people can donate) has generated funds, so we are very grateful for your time and effort on our behalf.

The past holiday season was exceptionally busy, and we saw more low-income families than usual. We are seeing over 70 families a week and the need to keep enough food on hand has kept us working longer and harder.

The need seems to be getting greater as we are now helping more than 450 men, women and children a month. Many are elderly, some lost their jobs, and others work two to three jobs and still cannot meet today’s expenses. The supplemental food we share is very much appreciated by those who seek our help.

We are always humbled by the people we serve and by the many businesses, individuals and organizations that support us. As an all-volunteer organization, knowing that you have helped make life a bit easier for someone in need is still our greatest gift. Your support is very much appreciated.
