Seventh- and eighth-graders from the Scarborough Middle School jazz band performed for several first- and second-grade classes and one kindergarten class from Pleasant Hill School last week.
The band traveled to the primary school and played for the children in their gymnasium Thursday. Musical Director Chris Fletcher taught the young audience the names of all of the instruments in the band. He also instructed them on when to clap after solos in a jazz concert.
The jazz band played five songs including Duke Ellington’s “Caravan” and a jazz rendition of a Jimi Hendrix tune arranged by Fletcher.
Pleasant Hill art teacher Julia Ruszkai organized the event, which she was particularly excited about because it hadn’t happened in over a decade. After the performance, students from the primary school handed out snacks and sunglasses to the band members to thank them for visiting their school.
