New this year to the derby’s schedule of events is the “So You Think You Can Dance” contest put on by FOX 23.
Participants will get the chance to win a $1,000 grand prize while runners-up will receive additional cash and prizes totaling more than $1,000. Proceeds will benefit Camp Sunshine.
Contestants will sign up in teams of up to six dancers for two-minute dance routines. All dancers must be 16 or older and must come with a minimum of $100 in pledges for every two performers entered. Dance studios are welcomed to submit teams.
Three categories of dance styles are available, the first being ballroom and the second includes jazz, lyrical and modern. Hip-hop, street funk and break dancing make up the third category. Tap and ballet are not included.
Judges will base their decisions on technique, costuming, “wow-ability” and pledges raised. The top two scorers from each category will be given an additional one minute each to compete for the top spot in each category.
The winners in each category will be placed in a random drawing for the $1,000 grand prize. Drawings for $500 and $250 cash prizes will follow, as well as gifts and trophies for the runners-up.
Deadline for registration is Feb. 16.
The contest will be held Saturday, Feb. 24 from 7 to 10 p.m. at Point Sebago Resort off Route 302 in Casco.
Doors will open at 6 p.m. for spectators 21 and older with a $5 donation. Seating is limited. DJ Dave Winsor will act as master of ceremonies and spin the music contestants provide, as well as his own after the contest. A cash bar will also be available.
There is only room for 10 routines for each dance style, so organizer Lori LePauloue recommends all teams sign up as soon as they can. for people who want to register, buy tickets or learn more, she can be reached at lori.lepauloue@tdbanknorth.com or (207) 317-5160.
