At this year’s derby, the fly-in will again take flight with helicopters providing the main draw.
Two military helicopters – one a newer model Coast Guard Jet Ranger 3 rescue helicopter and the other a Blackhawk straight from the hangar of the Maine Air National Guard unit in Bangor, will greet visitors all day on Saturday starting at 10 a.m.
This year, unlike previous years when Raymond Beach has acted as the simulated flight deck, the choppers will be on display at the lagoon at Point Sebago in Casco. Visitors will be able to view the helicopters as well as speak with the brave military men and women who pilot and serve on them.
Also on display will be private helicopters that will offer rides for a fee. The choppers are two-seaters and can accommodate one person along with the pilot. Rides, if they are anything like last year, will offer passengers scenic views overlooking the pine-lined shores of Sebago Lake with ice fishermen dotting the frozen waters.
“Last year, the private helicopter rides were swamped. There were a lot of people excited last year,” event organizer Tom Noonan said. “Thisd year, I’m sure it’ll be the same. It’s a great opportunity to get a good view of what’s going on.”
In addition to the helicopter rides, the ReMax real estate balloon will offer tethered hot air balloon rides for those visitors who wish to get a bird’s eye perspective with the help of rotors.
Ample parking is available on the grounds of Point Sebago for those wishing to experience this year’s air show. Entrance to the air show is $5 for adults and $1 for children.
