Rep. Gary Moore, entering his third term as Standish’s state representative, was sworn in as a member of Maine’s 123rd Legislature on Wednesday, Jan. 3 by Chief Justice Leigh Saufley, right, of the state’s Supreme Judicial Court. Moore was accompanied to the ceremony by Rep. Josh Tardy, leader of the House Republicans and Reps. Abbie Holman and Ken Fletcher. Moore was sworn in after Michael Shaw withdrew from the race last week. On the night of the election, Nov. 7, Rep. Moore trailed opponent Michael Shaw by 13 votes. The narrow margin triggered a recount, which was conducted by the office of Maine Secretary of State Matthew Dunlap. The recount showed that Rep. Moore had prevailed by six votes. However, there remained another discrepancy between the number of votes cast and the number of voters checked off by poll workers. By that count, the number of votes exceeded the number of actual voters by 15. Faced with the prospect of a special election, Shaw withdrew from the race, sending the matter to the eight-member House Elections Committee on Jan. 3. By a unanimous vote, that panel declared Rep. Moore the winner. Shortly thereafter, the entire House voted unanimously to seat him in the Legislature. Courtesy photo
