Bonny Eagle High School varsity athletes were in action last weekend as the basketball teams met up with Scarborough, the ice hockey team faced Deering, and the wrestling team battled four opponents at Deering.
The girls’ basketball team hosted Scarborough Friday evening looking for their second straight win. And thanks to two late free throws by Messina Provencher, that’s exactly what they got. The Scots picked up a 58-53 victory over the Red Storm.
The Scots jumped out to a comfortable 11-point lead with a 17-6 first quarter. They maintained that lead going into halftime as both teams matched one another basket for basket in the second period.
Scarborough fought their way back into the game with a 19-10 third quarter and the Red Storm eventually took the lead late in the fourth period.
That’s when Provencher stole the ball with less than a minute to play and the outcome hanging in the balance. She was fouled and hit the free throws to reclaim the lead and the Scots added a couple insurance points for the five-point win.
Laura Bell led the way for Bonny Eagle with 17 points. The win makes the Scots 3-2 on the season.
They resume their regular season schedule against Massabesic Tuesday, Jan. 2.
The ice hockey team lost their second straight after opening the season 5-0. They dropped a 5-4 decision to Deering as the Rams scored a short-handed goal late in the final period.
Deering scored the only goal of the first 15 minutes and they took a 2-0 lead at the start of the second. Bonny Eagle then rallied to within one on a goal from Nate Jewell. Another score by Deering upped the Rams’ lead to 3-1 before Travis Dunn scored to send the teams to the third period with Deering hanging onto a 3-2 lead.
Bonny Eagle tied the game at 3-3 (another goal from Dunn) and they tied the score at 4-4 (another goal from Jewell).
Deering’s Joe Gildart then scored the short-handed game-winner with just over two minutes to play.
The Scots are now 5-2 and they will pick up their regular season schedule against Mt. Ararat on Saturday, Jan. 6.
