Standish Fire/EMS has received the SHAPE Award from the Maine Department of Labor and Standards. SHAPE stands for “Safety and Health Award for Public Employers.”

William Peabody, director of the department of labor and standards, along with Steve Greely, supervisor, and Jay Warren, occupational safety engineer, presented Standish Chief Martin Jordan at last week’s Town Council meeting with the award. It was noted at the meeting that this is the first time that any Fire/EMS department in Maine has ever received this award.

The SHAPE award is the highest award given to a community for being 100 percent compliant with all occupational and safety standard requirements.

“It was a tremendous amount of work with over 2,700 hours of training required for all Standish employees,” Chief Jordan said. “We also scored 100 percent on our recent inspection which is no small feat. It is quite a good feeling to be rated number one and receive the first-ever award for personnel safety. I am so proud of the members of Standish Fire/EMS.”
