Do you believe there’s a ‘war on Christmas?’
Laurette Theriault, 48, Casco
“Yes. It’s all over the Internet. It’s ridiculous that only a few people who have a problem with Christmas are making a big deal of it. I took my daughter into the Social Security office and I’m looking around and didn’t see any Christmas trees. The cop said they’re not allowed to put them up. I said, ‘You’re kidding, right?’ He said, ‘No.’ What’s Christmas without Christmas trees, or mentioning the birth of Jesus?”
Sarah Jandreau, 45, Raymond
“I do. I realize there’s a lot of diversity, but Christmas is part of it. And for people to single out Christmas in particular, it’s wrong. People want to have Hanakkuh and Kwanzaa but I’d like to have Christmas and not feel guilty about it.”
George Hsalevsky, 76, Hollis
“Yes, I do. There are a 100 reasons why I want it to be ‘Christmas.’ If we’re going to change our traditions, we might as well change the Bible. I do live in the United States. Why should I change my way for the people immigrating into the country. Some people might not like me saying that, but you can’t satisfy everyone.”
Terry Rice, 44, Windham
“Yeah, I do. It’s just that the pursuit of political correctness has morphed into neutralizing the holiday and taking away from the social goodwill that this holiday creates. The liberals are using political correctness as a tool to promote a political agenda and destroy the historically festive season. Judeo-Christian tradition shouldn’t have to yield its space to make room for other philosophies. What the other philosophies have to do is create their own space. There’s plenty of space. You don’t have to use ours.”
Ginna Christy, 39, Raymond
“I think there’s a war on any religious holiday. People don’t want to be specific anymore, such as saying ‘holiday tree’ rather than ‘Christmas tree,’ and Happy Holidays rather than ‘Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.'”
Tim Clements, 50, Buxton
“Yes, I think people try too hard to be politically correct. Everyone has their own holidays and Christmas is a traditional American holiday. People ought to call it what it is.”
