The holidays are a perfect time to catch up with relatives or friends. According to the American Automobile Association, more than half of the 37 million people who travel during the holidays will stay with family or friends.

For many people, welcoming guests into their homes can be a great way to bond. However, it can also make an already busy – and often stressful – season even more so. By following a few easy tips and doing a little bit of preparation, hosts can entertain without inducing extra stress.

Plan a holiday menu

• Don’t wait until the day guests arrive to shop for holiday groceries. Plan a menu and pick up all needed items a few days in advance, so crowded grocery stores can be avoided.

• Make some dishes beforehand so less time is spent in the kitchen when guests are there.

Create an inviting atmosphere

• Do a quick cleanup of the main areas of the home: the bathrooms, living and dining rooms, kitchen and any other places guests will see.

• Light a few candles, put out some new magazines or books and turn on some holiday music.

• Tiredness and fatigue can be one of the main sources of bickering and tension, so make sure guests have a chance to get a good night’s sleep.

• Take advantage of a guest’s offer to help. Whether it’s clearing a table, washing dishes or helping prepare a meal, most people are willing to pitch in. This will allow for more time with guests and less stress for the hosts.

Gift-giving made simple

• Plan ahead and make a list of everyone you need to shop for – also be sure to stick to the list.

• Order gifts online – many Web sites offer next-day shipping, so presents will arrive in time for the holidays.

• Be sure to wrap all gifts before guests arrive. Having beautifully wrapped gifts around the house adds to the holiday spirit.
