Police are still searching for the person responsible for the school evacuations in Cape Elizabeth last week.

On Wednesday, Nov. 29, all the schools in Cape Elizabeth were evacuated due to a bomb threat found at the high school.

According to Mary Bruns in the Cape superintendent’s office, a note was found in the high school that indicated there was a bomb both in the high school and the middle school.

According to Cape Elizabeth Chief of Police Neil Williams, the note is being processed by the Scarborough Police for any fingerprints. Both Scarborough and South Portland, who share a forensics lab, have better capabilities to handle the note, said Williams.

“Unfortunately we’re still doing interviews,” said Williams. Once the person is found, said Williams, he or she will have to pay the costs of an evacuation and search. Though he hasn’t yet calculated how much money that is, both the school and police department will seek restitution.

“Most of it is on the school side – transportation issues and feeding the kids,” said Williams, though using both the South Portland and State Police canine units adds to the cost.

All students were evacuated according to the school department’s emergency plan, said Bruns. The high school students were taken to South Portland High School, the middle school students were taken to Memorial Middle School in South Portland and the elementary students were taken to St. Bartholomew’s church in Cape Elizabeth. The students finished the day at the new locations and were bused back to Cape Elizabeth at the normal release time.

Williams asked anyone with information about the bomb threat to call 767-2273 to leave an anonymous tip.
