Sandbar Road resident Elizabeth Edwards was sworn in as the Area Two interim councilor at the Nov. 14 Standish Town Council meeting.
Edwards is replacing Councilor Dolores Lymburner who resigned from the council in October citing health reasons.
The 91-year-old Edwards will hold the seat until June when Lymburner’s term is set to expire.
During the 30 years Edwards has lived in Standish, she has served on several town committees including an 11-year stint on the planning board. More recently she has lent her services to a senior housing committee. She is currently serving on the Community Center Development Committee.
Although she will serve for the next seven months, she will not run for Lymburner’s seat in June.
“I am 91 years old,” said Edwards. “I am just trying to fill the gap for Dolly. I thought this would be a good way to fulfill my civic duty.”
Edwards is very active in the community. She belongs to the Grandaflora Garden Club, the local chapter of the Red Hat Society, Barbara’s Red Hatters and volunteers each Election Day at the polls checking in voters.
“Betty has always been active and civic-minded,” said friend Helen Sawyer who met Edwards when Edwards moved to Standish. “She has been on a lot of committees over the years.”
Edwards was unanimously appointed by the town council, and sworn in at Tuesday’s meeting by Town Clerk Mary Chapman.
According to Chapman, Edwards is possibly the oldest member the town council has ever had.
“She is just so vibrant,” said Chapman. “You would never know her age.”
91-year-old Elizabeth “Betty” Edwards, of Sandbar Road, is the newest member of the Standish Town Council. The active and civic-minded Edwards is filling a council seat vacated by Dolores Lymburner.
