A recount will be held in Augusta on Nov. 27 for the District 121 State House seat race in Cape Elizabeth.

Jennifer Duddy is requesting a recount on her race against Cynthia Dill after hearing on Monday about a mistake in vote counting. A total of 271 votes were miscounted in a race that Dill won 2,256-2,432. However, no one thinks the recount will affect the ultimate outcome of the race.

The miscount occurred with 138 write-ins and 31 blank ballots. The write-in ballots were hand counted after being electronically counted, said Deb Lane, Cape Elizabeth assistant town manager.

The problem occurred during the counting of the write-in ballots. When those ballots were reviewed, the clerks tallying the votes counted the votes for all of the races on the ballot, not just the races with write-in votes. This resulted in some votes being counted twice. The blank ballots were not reviewed manually in case voters had improperly marked them, said Lane.

Lane said that Dill was leading the election by 138 votes before the write-in ballots were counted, after those votes were tallied, she had a 176-vote lead.

“I don’t expect a change,” said Duddy on Thursday, Nov. 16. She filed a recount with the Secretary of State’s office on Nov. 14. Duddy had to pay $500 for the recount because the voting margin between the two candidates was more than 2 percent. Duddy said she worked hard on her campaign and this is the only way for her to get an accurate tally on the race.

Sealed ballots were picked up at the Cape town hall by a state trooper and will be reviewed by the Secretary of State’s office.
