The Cape Elizabeth Town Council will vote on Monday, Dec. 11, to make Paul McKenney the next council chairman.
McKenney, in his third year as a councilor, was nominated by fellow town councilors at their annual caucus Nov. 13. He will replace David Backer, whose one-year term as chairman is ending.
“I am very excited and think it is a great opportunity,” said McKenney on Monday. He said he enjoys the council because it is bipartisan and all the councilors can be counted on to be sensible and open-minded on the issues.
Councilors had very few reservations when it came to McKenney’s nomination.
“I think he’ll do a good job,” said Anne Swift-Kayatta. “He did a good job as finance chair and I think he’ll prove effective as chairman.”
“He’s perfect for the job,” said Cynthia Dill, citing his ability to keep an open mind and his good organizational skills.
Backer said he has enjoyed his year leading the council and has confidence McKenney will do a good job.
Town Councilor Mary Ann Lynch was nominated to lead the finance committee.
