Two men were killed last night in a head-on collision near the Lunt Road overpass on Interstate 295 in Falmouth.

State police said John Hochadel, 84, of Ward Road in Windham was traveling north in the southbound lane of I-295 when his Toyota Rav 4 SUV collided with the 2005 Subaru Legacy driven by William Murphy, 65, of Karynel Drive, South Portland.

Portland police spotted Hochadel somewhere between three and five miles before the crash and were attempting to intercept when the accident occurred, State Police spokesman Steve McCausland said Thursday.

Hochadel was killed instantly and Murphy later died at a Portland hospital, McCausland said. Neither was wearing a seatbelt.

Troopers are currently investigating why Hochadel was traveling in the wrong lane, McCausland said. It is unknown at this time if drugs and alcohol played a role in the crash.
