Two Trails Diner on Ossipee Trail is closed indefinitely after a small fire damaged the kitchen of the popular Standish eatery.

At 5:52 p.m. Tuesday night, four hours after the diner closed, a passing motorist called the Standish Fire Department and reported seeing black smoke exiting the building.

Fire and rescue personnel and vehicles were on the scene minutes later and had the fire out by 6:04 p.m.

“It was caught early and extinguished quickly,” said Brent Libby deputy chief of the Standish Fire Department.

The state fire marshal’s office sent investigators from Augusta to inspect the building Wednesday.

“The fire is still under investigation,” said Standish Fire Chief Martin Jordan. “There are a lot of things that should have worked but did not.”

According to Martin the heat detectors in the kitchen did not activate, nor did the hood system over the grill.

The quick response by the Standish Fire Department limited the damage to the business. The fire was contained in the kitchen area where it started and was extinguished within 13 minutes of the call being received.

This is the third time in the diner’s history that emergency services have been called to douse flames at the business. According to Jordan it appears the restaurant had a fire not too long ago.

“There was evidence in the building that there was a fire there recently,” said Jordan. “We were not called to that fire and have no record of it.”

The 50s style diner offer is located on the corner of routes 25 and 113.
