Although elections were over Nov. 7 the race for House District 102 between Republican incumbent Gary Moore and Democratic challenger Mike Shaw continues.
Challenger Shaw was told of his victory Tuesday night only to learn shortly after that winning by only 13 votes entitled Moore to a recount.
On election night Moore decide he would ask for the recount.
“With such a small difference in votes, I believe I will request a recount,” said Moore.
Deputy Secretary of State Doug Dunbar said the recount has been scheduled for Nov. 27 at 9 a.m.
According to Secretary of State’s office, when a race is won by less than 1 percent of the vote, troopers from the Maine State Police are sent to the polling place in question to retrieve the ballots and deliver them to a secure state police building in Augusta.
State police arrived in Standish Friday, Nov. 10, and took possession of the ballots from Tuesday’s election. The ballots are now being housed at the new Maine Department of Public Safety building on Route 27 in Augusta.
Once the Secretary of State’s office receives a written request for a recount, each candidate will have to bring six of their own ballot counters to Augusta and an employee from the Bureau of Corporation, Elections and Commissions, a division of the Secretary of State’s office, will supervise the recount. Both Moore and Shaw will be allowed to watch the count if they so choose.
“I may not be there for the entire count,” said Moore, “But I will be present for some of it.”
Mike Shaw will also be present for the count.
“I will certainly be there to watch the recount with Gary,” said Shaw.
Once the recount is complete both candidates will be asked to sign off on the final result.
Recounts are not uncommon. According to Dunbar, there are currently 12 recounts from this year’s election on the calendar. Any candidate can request a recount within five business days from election. Written requests this year must be in by Wednesday, Nov. 15.
The new legislative session begins in January.
