To our fellow citizens in Windham,

The election is over. The people of Windham have spoken. But what did they say?

In Windham, 54 percent of voters voted in favor of the Taxpayer Bill of Rights (TABOR). This is a fantastic result, particularly given the negative campaign waged against this people’s initiative by those who benefit from ever-increasing government spending.

What is incomprehensible to us, however, is this: Windham voted to re-elect both Bill Diamond and Mark Bryant, candidates who opposed TABOR. It’s not that voters didn’t have a clear choice. Both Diamond and Bryant were opposed by candidates who supported TABOR. In the gubernatorial race, Windham voted to support anti-TABOR candidates 65 percent to 35 percent. This, to us, is illogical.

What do the people of Windham want? They seem to want meaningful controls on out-of-control government spending. Yet they re-elect people from the Democrat Party who have been responsible for this out-of-control spending. This is like wanting to protect your chickens from the fox, yet hiring the fox to guard them. It makes no sense.

Democrats have been in control in Maine for 30 years. They have given us the highest in the nation tax burden, the worst business climate, 25 percent of our population on Medicaid and the highest food-stamp usage rate in the nation. This is good? Insanity is when you keep doing the same thing; yet keep hoping for different results.

The majority of voters in Windham supported TABOR. Together we can force changes. Perhaps some of you think that Diamond and Bryant can change their stripes, and that’s why you voted for them. We happen to be skeptical, but let’s see if we can take the 3,464 people who voted for TABOR in Windham and move forward to accomplish what we say we want; meaningful controls on government spending.
