In the race for two Scarborough Town Council seats, Carol Rancourt held onto her position and longtime resident and council newcomer Richard Sullivan Jr. won the other.
Rancourt, also a lifelong resident of Scarborough, and Sullivan beat David Dedian and Michael Shea. With a 61 percent voter turnout on Election Day, Nov. 7, Rancourt captured 4,096 votes, Sullivan had 3,524, Dedian was a close third, just 89 votes behind Sullivan with 3,435 and Shea came away with 2,974.
A third seat, an uncontested one-year term left by retiring Council Chairman Steve Ross, went to Ronald Ahlquist, a former councilor.
“I want to thank all the people who voted for me and even those who didn’t but came out to vote,” said Rancourt. “There’s a lot of issues on our plate and I’m ready to roll up my sleeves and jump right in.”
There are many things facing the town, said Rancourt, which she hopes to start working on. Among those, she said, are continuing to preserve open space and neighborhoods as businesses come to town, addressing affordable housing and implementing the comprehensive plan.
“We need some sort of school construction and we need to look at some sort of community center,” added Rancourt. The challenge, she said, will be accomplishing everything in an affordable way.
“I want to thank all the voters who came out and voted for me and congratulate Carol on her win,” said Sullivan. “Dave Dedian ran a good race and a good campaign, and it was real close.”
Sullivan reiterated his plans to keep spending and taxes down in Scarborough.
“I want to hold the line on spending in this town,” said Sullivan, who added that he enjoyed campaigning and the opportunity to meet new Scarborough residents.
Dedian, though disappointed, thanked voters and congratulated both Sullivan and Rancourt. While he doesn’t have any concrete plans, he said, he intends to stay involved with the town.
“It’s something that I am certainly interested in,” said Dedian. He added that he learned how to better run a campaign and had fun while running for the council.
Shea also thanked all those who voted for him and added that he’ll try for another council seat in the future.
“I’ll definitely do it again,” said Shea. “It was interesting.” Next time around, said Shea, he hopes to be a little more involved in advertising and campaigning, but enjoyed seeing how people perceived him in this campaign.
