Two men remain jailed Tuesday, arrested in Scarborough Halloween night following a brief chase that ended with a crash in the woods.

Scarborough police said they were called during the night Oct. 31 by a resident on Jana Lane, who reported a suspicious car in the area. When police arrived at the scene, the car took off. Police recognized the vehicle as one reported stolen in Bangor on Oct. 29.

Police attempted to stop the car, but it fled along Gorham Road to Sweetbrier Lane. After less than a mile, the car crashed into the woods and the two men inside fled on foot. After a short foot chase and search of the woods, Charles Richards, 35, of Bangor, and Mark Chubbuck, 41, of Ellsworth Falls, were arrested and then taken to Maine Medical Center for treatment. They were transported to Cumberland County Jail on Thursday.

Richards was charged with possession of cocaine, eluding an officer, refusing to submit to arrest, unauthorized use of a vehicle, operating under the influence, operating after suspension and violating bail conditions. Chubbuck was charged with possession of stolen property, possession of cocaine and refusing to submit to arrest.

Bail for Richards was set at $25,000 in property or $5,000 cash, and $5,000 surety for Chubbuck or $500 in cash.
