Editor,
I have been reading several letters to the editor, articles and political advertisements regarding Jessica’s law and LD 1717 and felt the issue important enough for me to write and clear things up.
There seems to be an effort by some candidates and politicians who were against Jessica’s Law to get the voters to believe that Jessica’s law passed. It did not. What passed removed the mandatory sentences and in effect took the teeth out of the bill. It is deceptive to claim that Jessica’s Law was passed and is clearly an attempt to confuse the voters this November.
Two of our local legislators and one state senator were strong supporters of Jessica’s Law. They saw the need for tougher mandatory sentences and stood tough against a weak compromise. They were District 103 Representative John Robinson of Raymond, District 101 Representative Rich Cebra of Naples, and District 12 State Senator Bill Diamond of Windham. They deserve our thanks and support for doing what is right in protecting our children.
Sincerely,
Dana Desjardins
Raymond
