Gorham Planning Board members and several neighbors braved the cold and rain on Saturday (Oct. 28) to view the site of a proposed asphalt plant in Gorham.

Shaw Brothers Construction, Inc., of Gorham is proposing a $10 million asphalt plant and stone quarry on a 116-acre site off Mosher Road (Route 237).

Residents of the area raised concerns about noise, air emissions, traffic and devaluation of nearby property.

Many of those attending the site walk wore safety colors as the first day of deer hunting season with rifles got underway. In a dense, wooded hillside, the group came across deer hunter Cody McPhee of Gorham who was hunting for a “big buck” that took off after being shot. “It’s a wicked good hunting area,” McPhee said.

The construction company plans to submit their application for the proposal to Gorham’s planning office this week. They hope to be on the planning board agenda in December.

But Susan Robie, chairman of the planning board, doubted that a “complete review” of the proposal would be likely that soon.
