Scarborough High School students will spend Sunday in school, transforming a courtyard into an environmental science classroom.

Members of the Key Club and the Environmental Club will work to change a grassy courtyard across from the guidance office into a place where students can learn about composting and other environmentally friendly concepts.

“This is good kids doing good work,” said Christy Zavasnik, Key Club adviser. “They do a lot for the community. It’s really incredible.”

Junior Allie Solender, the vice president of the Environmental Club, has taken leadership of the courtyard project.

“Right now the courtyard just isn’t used for anything,” said Solender. “It would be great for students to go out there for science classes.”

The students will plant donated shrubs and spring bulbs from O’Donal’s Nursery in Gorham, and they will use donated mulch, topsoil and compost from Risbara Brothers of Scarborough and Ace Hardware at Oak Hill.
