That little datebook I carry in my pocketbook is a Godsend.
If I think I have a few spare moments to sit down and read, and enjoy a dish of ice cream, I just have to scan the datebook to note that there’s an appointment, or a deadline, or a project to be done. Or dishes to wash or clothes to put away. My mother had the best advice: If you feel like it, read. The dishes will still be there waiting for you.
My datebook has a few notes that may be of interest to our readers who like (or need) to plan ahead. Nov. 11 this year is, as always, an important date. We used to call it Armistice Day but it’s known best as Veterans Day and this year for the second time, there will be a big gala at the Windham Veterans Center. I’ve agreed to “coordinate the food” again and will be looking for some help. The center could use some help in October, finalizing and landscaping the Veterans Park.
Speaking of the park, I was distressed recently to see all of the fast food trash up there, that some picnickers must have forgotten to take with them! Another of my mom’s favorite expression comes to mind: Clean up after yourself!
Some other notations from my datebook include the Sept. 26 Windham Public Library Book Club meeting at 6:15 p.m. The book choice is “Year of Wonders” by Geraldine Brooks, which describes the 17th century plague and how it affected an English village. For more information on this meeting, call Barbara at 892-1908. Everyone is welcome to the book discussion.
The Windham Land Trust will hold a baked bean supper at the Friends Church from 5-6 p.m. on October 28 and will have a presence at craft fairs on Nov. 11 at the Windham Hill Church and the high school (same day).
The Historical Society will have a bake sale at the election in November and also a table of items for sale at the Windham Hill Church holiday fair on Nov. 11.
Who said things slow down in the fall?
See you next week.
