Reta Virginia Bailey, 86
Enjoyed vacations at Raymond Pond
Reta Virginia Bailey, 86, South Portland, died Sept. 7, 2006.
She was born May 8, 1920, in Bartlett, N.H., the daughter of George W. and Gladys Foster Aldridge. She attended local schools and graduated from Bartlett High School in 1938. The following year she attended North Eastern Business College in Portland.
She was employed by Porteous Mitchell and Braun for many years as a
bookkeeper retiring in 1975. She enjoyed reading and crocheting and was a great fan of the Boston Red Sox.
For many years, she enjoyed being at her summer cottage at Raymond Pond Shores with her family.
She was predeceased by her husband Lyndolph H. Bailey who died Aug. 17, 1981.
Surviving are a son, Lynn F. Bailey and his wife Patricia of Gladwin, Mich.; and a daughter, Eileen Coons and her husband Gary of South Portland: three grandchildren, Laurie Bailey of Gladwin, Mich., Wendy Bowling of No. Branch, Mich., and Scott Bailey of Canton, Mich.; and five great-grandsons.
Her funeral was held at Hobbs Funeral Home, South Portland followed by interment in New Hampshire.

Judith Y. Castle, 63
Judith Y. Castle, 63, of Portland died Sept. 12, 2006, at Maine Medical Center after a long illness.
She was born in Birmingham, Ala., a daughter of Wayne and Mary Dickerson Queen. She attended schools in Illinois and Pennsylvania graduating from Johnstown High School.
Mrs. Castle was employed for 34 years as Office Manager for the Outpatient Department at Maine Medical Center until her death.
She was a faithful member of Royal Ridge Church of God for several years where she served on the church board, and was a former youth leader. Judith stated that later in life God granted her another son and daughter, Lucas and his wife Leah Mwanzo their children, Tina, Judy and Ben. The Mwanzo’s named their daughter Judy to honor Judith.
She was devoted to her family, church and everyone she knew at Maine Medical Center. She also enjoyed quilting, traveling and especially the trips to Disney World.
Besides her mother, she leaves her husband of 40 years, James H. Castle both of Portland; a son, Jason J. and his wife Michelle Castle of Windham; a daughter, Marybeth M. Castle of Portland; three brothers, Tom Queen of Florida, John
Queen of South Carolina, Paul Queen of Ohio; a sister, Elena Granholm of Yarmouth; two grandsons, Andrew James Castle, Tyler Wayne Castle, both of Windham;
eight nephews; three nieces; seven great-nephews; and four great-nieces.
A celebration of her life was held at Royal Ridge Church of God, Scarborough, with Pastor Brian Wade officiating.

Maurice J.C. Clark Jr., 57
Maurice J.C. Clark Jr., 57, of Buxton died Sept. 10, 2006, at his home.
He was born in Oakland, Calif., the son of Maurice C. and Frances Baker Clark

J.C. is survived by his wife Joene; two sons, Ben Clark of Windsor, and Maurice C. Clark III of Limington; a daughter, Tamara Clark; two brothers, Carroll Clarke of Monmouth, and Arthur Clark of New Gloucester; and a sister, Barbara Stone of New Gloucester. He is also survived by three grandchildren.
A graveside service was held at Chase Cemetery, Highland Cliff Road, Windham. Arrangements are by Dolby Funeral Chapel, Windham.
Thomas S. Furnas, 79
Retired from Postal Service
Thomas S. Furnas, 79 of Windham, formerly of South Portland, died Sept. 11, 2006 at Maine Medical Center.
He was born in Portland, a son of Alfred and Mary O’Connell Furnas, and attended local schools.
He was employed for 34 years with the U. S. Postal Service and was a letter carrier until his retirement. He was a member of the Letter Carrier Union.
Mr. Furnas served in the U. S. Navy during World War II, in the South Pacific.
Besides his wife of 41 years, Lillian (Sirois) Furnas of Windham, he leaves a stepson, Fred Tardif of Buxton; a setpdaughter, Paulette Bernier of San Diego, Calif; a brother, Jack Furnas of Florida, five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Graveside services were held at Calvary Cemetery, South Portland.

Brenda A. Kirk, 43
Enjoyed music, family and friends
Brenda A. Kirk, 43, of Westbrook died Sept. 9, 2006 as a result of an automobile accident.
She was born in Portland, a daughter of David and Marie Annette Joyce Tondreau. She was raised and educated in Westbrook and attended Westbrook High School. She had been employed by Sebago Moc for many years.
She loved life and lived it to the fullest, She enjoyed music, dancing, family and many, many friends. She has asked to tell everyone that she had hurt in her lifetime, to forgive her.
She leaves her mother; father; her son, David Wayne of Westbrook; sister, Jacqueline Joyce of Windham; brother, Peter Joyce Jr. of Westbrook; two nieces, Kelsie Berry, Nevaeh Joyce; and aunts and uncles.
Memorial services were held at Blais & Hay Funeral Home, Westbrook.
Ida F. Urquhart, 89
An accomplished artist
Ida Fortin Urquhart, 89, devoted wife and mother, of Raymond, died on Sept. 11, 2006, after a brief illness.
Ida was born in Windham, Nov. 22, 1916, the daughter of Henry and Bertha Fortin. She graduated from Portland High School and continued to be a lifelong learner.
She married Hildreth Urquhart in 1941, a marriage that lasted 64 years until his death in 2005. They had two daughters and raised their family in Portland, retired to Prospect Harbor in 1970 and moved to Raymond in 2000.
Ida was an accomplished artist. She excelled in painting, china doll making, quilting and as a seamstress. She was well known for her beautiful bird decoys and for her whole cloth stenciled quilts. she also collected coins and enjoyed needlecrafts and gardening.
She was devoted to her family and enjoyed the companionship of her wire haired fox terriers.
Ida was predeceased by her husband and her sister Beatrice Sylvester of Portland.
She is survived by her sister Lillian Cole of Portland; her daughters, Dr. Jolene Schillnger Erickson and husband Ken of Henniker, N.H., and Sandra Colburn and husband Gary of Raymond; grandchildren, George Schillinger of Ithaca, N.Y., Stephen Schillinger and wife Siobhan of Randolph, Vt., Todd Colburn and wife Amy of Starks and Leslie Colburn Brooks and husband Peter of Raymond. Ida also leaves behind three great-grandchildren who brought her much pleasure and joy: twins Alec and Keegan Brooks and great-granddaughter Amalia Schillinger.
A memorial service will be held in Prospect Harbor at a later date.
Daniel R. Weston, 54
Interested in variety of activities
Daniel R. Weston, 54, of Standish died Sept. 9, 2006, at home following a long illness, surrounded by his family.
He was born in Portland on Sept. 12, 1951, the son of R. Frank and Patricia Welch Weston.
Dan graduated from Deering High School in 1971 and for the past 40 years was an automotive technician most recently employed by Prime Nissan of Saco. For a time he served as an instructor of automotive technology at Southern Maine Technical College.
Dan had a broad variety of interests including motorcycles, radio-controlled planes, antique outboard motors, short-wave radios, skiing, and spending time with his grandchildren.
He was a member of several clubs and organizations including Cumberland Lions, Cumberland Fire Department, Cumberland Cub Scout Troop Leader, United Bikers of Maine, Pine Tree Boating Club, and Standish Kiwanis. Later in his life he enjoyed vacations at his summer home on Cliff Island.
Dan was predeceased by his mother, Patricia Weston, in 2004. Survivors include his companion Eva Douglas and her son Josh Douglas; his son, Daniel E. Weston; his daughter, Rebecca M. Wimert and her husband Rod; grandson Owen Beck; granddaughters Kaileigh and Delaney; his former wife, Lorraine Brinkert; his father, R. Frank Weston; brother Jeffrey S. Weston; sisters Valerie J. Sullivan and Pamela Jordan; and many nieces and nephews.
A celebration of his life was held at Standish Kiwanis, Beach Road, Standish; Dolby Funeral Chapel, Windham, handled final arrangements.

Berta Singer Young, 89
Berta Singer Young, 89, Auburn, died Sept. 9, 2006 at Clover Health Care with her loving family by her side.
She was born in Somersworth, N.H., May 31, 1917, the daughter of Hallam and Florida (Rainville) Singer. She grew up in South Portland attending South Portland schools and was a 1936 graduate of South Portland High School.
Since moving to Auburn in the late 1960s, she had been employed with the Cooperative Extension Service of the University of Maine System until her retirement in 1985. Following her retirement, she was an avid reader, and also was a volunteer librarian at the Barker Mill Arms Extension of the Auburn Public Library for a number of years.
Survivors include one daughter, Judy A. Sanderson and her husband Andrew of Auburn; two sisters, Lennie Butler of Auburn, and Janice Shanahan of Naples; one beloved granddaughter, Deborah Shaw of South Portland. Also surviving are many nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband, George E. Young; one daughter, Georgia Ann Shaw; and two brothers, Hallam Singer Jr., and George Olsen.
At Berta’s request there will be no funeral service.
