With two victories, driver Heath Campbell dominated the Maine Breeders Stakes finals for two-year olds on Sunday at Scarborough Downs.

Although they didn’t win, a local filly and a colt raced credibly. Both earned checks in the rich finals despite battling maladies during the season.

In the trot for two-year fillies, Campbell captured the winner’s 50 percent share of a $47,476 purse with Pembroke Matron in 2:06 4/5. It went to the gate as a non-betting event after the afternoon card’s third race.

Then in race five, Campbell sent Pembroke Forward wire-to-wire from post 6 in the fifth to win the $48,982 trot for two-year-old trotting colts and geldings in 2:09 2/5. The colt went bested both second place finisher Fenway Fan and Race Me Yugioh, which was third, by two lengths.

In a surprise driver change for the final, Bill Childs of Westbrook handed the reins of Race Me Yugioh to driver Drew Campbell. Childs, who owns and trains the gelding, had been the trotter’s only driver in four lifetime starts.

Explaining the driver’s switch, Childs said a first time driver change can make a difference. He said the trotter is steady and wasn’t worried about that the horse would go off stride.

Race Me Yugioh had to overcome sickness to earn a spot in the final, and went in with only $1,511 in earnings and had the fewest starts in the field. “He’s a real big trotter and a late foal,” said Childs, adding that he developed Yugioh with caution.

In the race, Drew Campbell made an early bid with Race Me Yugioh trotting more than the last half on the outside to pick up $5,877 for third.

In the seventh race, Joey Mosher reined Keys to Lahart to victory in 2:01 1/5 in the $49,143 final for two-year-old filly pacers.

As the starting gate wings folded, driver Mark Athearn hustled Red Bird of Buxton to the front in the first turn from post four. But Pembroke Primo, which finished second for Heath Campbell was on top at the quarter with the race winner second.

With his filly sitting a comfortable third on the rail, Pat Leavitt was optimistic eyeing the race from the apron in front of the grandstand. But Red Bird of Buxton ran into traffic trouble when Pembroke Lori-Lou went first over followed by Ms Jeanne Marie.

“He was following the best two but got blocked in,” Leavitt said after the race.

But Leavitt said Athearn made the right decision. “I didn’t want to be first over,” Leavitt said. “It’s a killer.”

Red Bird of Buxton finished fifth, just four lengths behind the winner and earned $2,457. Leavitt said his filly had a season-long bout with illness and he praised his trainer, Don Richards. “She did well to get to the finals,” Leavitt said.

Red Bird of Buxton went into the final with $13,414 in seasonal earnings.

Boogeyman, driven by Stephen Mahar captured the $49,060 two-year-old pace in 2:00 1/5. Leaving from post four, Boogeyman led at every panel.

The finals for Maine’s three-year-old colts and fillies will be on Sunday, Oct. 12, at Scarborough Downs.
