Two teenagers were expected to return to the Long Creek Youth Development Center after running away while they were on a trip in Black Point State Park in Scarborough Aug. 29.

The two male teenagers were caught Aug. 30 around 10:30 a.m. on Black Point Road by Scarborough police, said Sgt. Greg Bedor. A resident noticed two teenagers walking down the road, notified police, and they were caught soon after.

“It looked like they had been outside all night,” said Bedor. “They had bug bites and scratches.”

Long Creek, a juvenile corrections facility located in South Portland, was leading six teenagers on a Project Adventure trip when the two ran away.

Project Adventure, said Long Creek Superintendent Rodney Bouffard, is part of Long Creek’s method of gradually reintegrating teenagers into the community.

“This is much safer for them and for the community than just sending them back out on the day of their release,” said Bouffard.

The teenagers that are allowed on trips like yesterday’s are always low-risk and close to their release date, he added. “The risk was absolutely minimal,” Bouffard said.
