The landmark Scarborough Downs sign high over Route 1 is sporting a fresh new look thanks to a recent restoration.
Sign Design of Portland completed work on the sign, which is 50 feet tall, last week. While the sign has been completely refinished, the most notable change is a change in the spelling of Scarborough on the sign.
When the sign was first installed when the track opened in 1950, it was common to spell town’s name as “Scarboro.” The updated sign now gives the proper spelling of “Scarborough.”
“The sign’s update is indicative of a new era for the track,” said Scarborough Downs representative Karen Vachon.
