Oliver on dean’s list
Nathaniel Oliver was named to the dean’s list for the fall and spring semesters of the past academic year at the University of Southern Maine.
He is the son Steven and Joy Oliver.
Oliver, majoring in social work and criminal justice, is a junior. He graduated from Westbrook High School in 2004.
He was the first to serve as a student representative to the Westbrook School Committee.
A niece for Iraq vet
Caleb Barrieau, who served in Iraq with Westbrook’s Company B, became a new uncle on June 29 with the arrival of Hannah Elizabeth Armstrong.
She is the first child of his sister and brother-in-law, Danielle (Barrieau) and Jed Armstrong. Hannah Elizabeth was born at Glenn Falls Hospital in Glenn Falls, N.Y. She weighed eight pounds and four ounces. And was 20.5 inches long.
Paul Barrieau of Hawaii is the new grandfather. The new mom is a 1999 graduate of Westbrook High School.
Blueberry festival Saturday
Trinity Lutheran Church, 612 Main St., is hosting a blueberry festival and celebration from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 12.
The festival, which will be held rain or shine, will include children’s activities with games and face painting. Hot dogs, hamburgers and drinks will be available at a minimal cost.
Fresh blueberries, homemade blueberry pie, muffins and cakes will be available to purchase.
A service team from Thrivent Financial for Lutherans is sponsoring the festival. The group is a not-for-profit organization that helps nearly three million members plan for their financial futures.
Trinity is planning for its 125th anniversary celebration next year. The celebration will include a banquet, guest speakers and special events.

USM recognizes Valley
Michelle L. Valley was recently awarded the MacDonald Page and Co. Scholarship at the annual Recognition Day at the University of Southern Maine.
Valley is majoring in business administration and is a 2000 graduate of Westbrook High School.
She is the daughter of Bruce R. Valley of Westbrook.
Doggett honored on 90th
Doris Doggett celebrated her 90th birthday on July 30.
Attending a party were her sister, Queenie Buxton of Westbrook who turned 91 on July 1; Doggett’s three daughters, Lee, Lynn and Mary; son-in-law Dick Piper; sister-in-law Ella Couch and her daughter, Christine; grandchildren Matthew, Kali, Ken and wife, Erin, along with Jill and her husband, Kevin; five great-grandchildren and several friends and neighbors.
Genocide commemoration plans
Rev. Mutima Peter of Westbrook said the Congolese Tutsi community has announced plans for a commemoration of genocide in Central Africa for Saturday, Aug. 12, at Sacred Heart/St. Dominic’s Catholic Church, 80 Sherman St., Portland.
The observance will be begin at 2 p.m. with a march to the church from Monument Square. Jean Pierre Kabirigi, an internationally recognized expert on the Central African region, will speak. The program will included testimonies from survivors and those who lost loved ones and friends in genocide.
Genocide has claimed the lives of thousands from 1996 through the massacre of 164 Banyamulenge Tutsis in the Gatumba refugee camp on Aug. 13, 2004, in Burundi. Peter witnessed the aftermath of the massacre in which victims were hacked or burned to death two years ago.
Peter is pastor of the International Christian Fellowship Church in Portland.
Anderson scholarship recipient
Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences in West Boothbay Harbor recently announced that Amy Beth Anderson has received a scholarship in memory of Dr. Maureen D. Keller.
Anderson is entering her second year at the University of South Carolina in Columbia, S.C., where she is majoring in marine science. She was one of 60 applicants for the Keller scholarship, which awarded annually to a Maine student majoring in science.
Dr. Louise Sage, executive director of Bigelow Laboratory, presented a $1,000 check to Anderson in July.
Hockey field days
Westbrook Youth Hockey will host a field day at Riverbank Park on Wednesday, Aug. 16, 2006 from 4 to 6 p.m. The event will consist of games, prizes, snacks and drinks. Everyone coming to the event will have the chance to meet the players and coaches of Westbrook Youth Hockey.
