Robert Skoglund, aka the Humble Farmer, will appear at the Casco Village Church Friday, Aug. 4, at 7:30 p.m. in a benefit for the Casco Public Library.
Humble has had his own Maine Public Radio show for more than 25 years and has been called New England’s Garrison Keillor. He has written for more than 50 newspapers and has entertained hundreds of audiences from Holland to California. He lives in St. George where he was born and brought up.
“Skoglund is undoubtedly one of New England’s greatest humorists. He is extremely funny and captivates his audience with his quick wit and dry sense of humor… I truly believe he has harvested the hearts of all generations with his unique style,” says Joseph E. Brennan, former governor of the state of Maine.
Educated in St. George schools and at colleges in Potsdam, Gorham and the University of Maine at Orono, Humble was a fellow at the University of Rochester where he earned a graduate degree in linguistics. While at Rochester, he represented United States graduate students at the 10th International Congress of Linguists in Bucharest. While picking up his grant money in Bucharest, he asked to meet the other U.S. delegates, and was told, “There is but one delegate from each country.” Amazed, Skoglund said, “You mean I’m representing Yale, Harvard, MIT and Machias State? Why did you pick me?” Dr. Mohrmon looked him up and down and replied, “Perhaps you were the only one who applied.”
Humble’s appearance in Casco is his first in this area. Tickets are available at the Casco Public Library for $10 each. They will be $12 at the door. A pot luck supper will be held at 5:30 p.m. prior to the show. Bring a main dish or salad if you wish to partake. Drinks and desserts will be provided. Call the library at 627-4541 on Tuesdays, Thursdays, or Sundays for more information.
