Gorham High School sophomore-to-be David Gushee was the low qualifier at Biddeford-Saco Country Club for this year’s Maine Amateur golf tournament. The 15-year-old shot a 72.

On Tuesday, before he teed it up in the first round of this week’s Maine Am at Portland Country Club, we caught up with Gushee and asked him a few questions.

On his low qualifying round at Biddeford-Saco:

“Me and my friend went out. He was on the bag and it was just a fun time. I had a lot of saves, didn’t hit a lot of greens, but my putting was good and everything just went right.”

On what he does to prepare for tournaments like the Maine Amateur:

“Sleep and practice, mostly. I try to rest, don’t do too much, but it’s hard with hockey (Gushee plays on a summer league team) and golf, too … I hit the range, hit the putting green and play. Every day there’s golf, whether it’s tournaments or just practicing.

On what areas of his game his devoting the most practice time to:

“I just got a new putter (a Scotty Cameron club), and I’ve been working with that a lot so my lag putts are good. I’ve got that going for me and just my iron play. Everything outside 155 yards I’ve got to get fine-tuned.”

On the most important things in his bag during a tournament:

“The driver, a Titleist 905T and the putter, the Scotty Cameron. The driver and the putter are really everything. And there’s the sand wedge, a Cleveland sand wedge. And I drink a lot of water and Gatorade. That’s it.”

On his goal for the Maine Amateur:

“I think even par for both days is going to be good, depending on how other people play. But anything from 68 to 72 both days would be good.”

On fellow Gorham Country Club member and Maine Am entrant, Windham’s Shawn Warren:

“He’s a member out at Gorham, so I see him all the time and we play a couple times. He’s a player. I mean he’s a Division I college player, number one on Marshall, so that’s a good place to be.”

On what the future holds for him:

“I’m just going with it for now. I’ll see where golf takes me. I’m really more into golf right now than hockey. But I’ll just see where the tournaments take me and see where everything goes.”
