How would you like to see the steamer “Sokokis” traveling down the Presumpscot River? About 100 years ago, it was a common sight in the summer. A tourist promotion booklet published in 1895 states the Sokokis made daily trips from the wharf at Bridge Street in Westbrook, up the Presumpscot River to Mallison Falls, where advertisements touted the terminus as “a delightful spot with pavilions, rustic seats and adornments” all beneath cool foliage. What a summer treat! The Sokokis was 60 feet long and could hold 125 people. For eight summers it travelled the river three times a day Monday through Saturday.
