Cape Elizabeth will celebrate its annual Family Fun Day this Saturday, June 17 with a parade and a day of events at Fort Williams capped off by fireworks. The rain date for the festival is June 24.

The parade begins at 10:30 a.m., starting from Cottage Farm Road. It will feature floats from local community groups and teams as well as antique cars, the Cape Elizabeth Fire Department and much more. There will also be a special “celebrity” guest, Crackers, the mascot of the Portland Pirates.

Neighborhoods that would like to build their own floats still have time to join the parade. There will be trophies for the best antique car, best decorated float and best bicycle.

After the parade ends at Fort Williams, the fun continues. There will be face painting, a talent show from 3 to 4 p.m., numerous crafts, a number of booths serving a variety of foods and beverages and musical entertainment throughout the day.

This year’s musical entertainment includes two jazz bands, a steel drum band, two rock bands and a DJ. For the first time this year, an ultimate Frisbee game, scheduled for 2 p.m., will join the other kids games and the Cape Elizabeth Fire Department will be sponsoring its traditional “Fun in the Foam” from 4:15 to 5 p.m.

The fireworks show begins about 9:30 p.m. The gates to Fort Williams will be closed to traffic at 9 p.m. and they will be reopened for exit only after the show.

Local non-profit groups or organizations wishing to take part in this year’s celebration should contact Gene Weismann at 767-7111 or Ike Johnson at 799-2434 for information. Local artists or crafts people interested in having a booth should contact Rose Kennealy at 799-1674.

In addition, the organizing committee is looking for volunteers to assist in the day’s events. Whether organizing and guiding parade participants or helping with the children’s games, extra hands are always appreciated.
