The Westbrook Eagles remain in first place with a one-game lead over Kiwanis entering the final week of the regular season. The Eagles ran their winning streak to 12 games as they defeated Sappi 8-2 and Prompto 16-7 during this past week.

In the first game, pitching was the name of the game as Adam Begos, Matt Moody, Cale Bollig and Joe Quinlan combined for a one-hitter. Offensively, the Eagles scored eight times in the second inning on five hits to put the game away.

In the second game, the Eagles defeated Prompto, 16-7. Once again, an early big inning iced the ballgame, as the Eagles scored nine times in the third. Repeat hitters for the Eagles were Joe Quinlan and Adam Begos. Ian King, Cody Champaign and Andrew St. Clair had hits for Prompto.

Westbrook Kiwanis won three games this past week to keep the race close entering the final week. Their first victory came harder then expected as a much improved Dairy Queen team gave them a great game with the final score only 5-1.

Diary Queen had key hits from Ben Arsenault, Kevin L’Heureux and Alex Benson, along with five strong innings by a young Sam Pattee on the mound. Kiwanis also tamed the Lions 20-2 and extinguished the Phoenix 9-3.

Tickets Unlimited got back on the winning track this week with a pair of wins. The first game on Tuesday Tickets defeated Prompto 8-3. Andrew McCarthy, Brandon Steele and Mike Pena were all repeat hitters for Tickets, while Cody Champagne and Darion Doucette had the only two hits for Prompto.

Thursday’s games started early but were cancelled due to a monstrous thunder storm leaving lake size puddles on all three fields. Tickets and Sappi resumed play the next day with Tickets coming out on top 8-1. The game featured the only hits that Trevor Bates has given up for Sappi this year. The only run allowed by Trevor also came across in this game.

Mike Pena had the first hit, a sharp single to right-center field. Brandon Steele had the second hit, a deep triple to right field that he eventually scored on as the cut-off was missed on the play. Bates pitched four strong innings, recording 10 strikeouts for Sappi. Keenan Lowe had two out of the three hits that Sappi managed.

Phoenix Welding won three games as well this past week to move into fourth place in the standings. Phoenix handled the Lions twice this past week, 16-4 and 16-10. In a very close game Phoenix edged the scrappy Dairy Queen team 7-6.

Starting pitcher Brock Leighton settled down after a rough first inning, and along with Ben Arsenault, pitched very well for DQ. The offense was led by Alex Benson and Kevin L’Heureux who each with multiple hits. Phoenix put out the fire with the bases loaded in the last inning to preserve the victory.

Action continues this week with games nightly at 5:30 through Thursday. The 2006 playoffs will begin Saturday, with games tentatively scheduled for noon and 3:00 pm.
