Greg Wilkinson was not pleased after Saturday’s SMAA track championships.

“I didn’t think we had a good meet,” said the coach of the Bonny Eagle boys. “I’m disappointed in certain areas. We’ve got to fine-tune some things.”

Wilkinson was, of course, looking ahead to state meet, which is what matters most in track circles. Every practice and competition before the states – the Class A meet is scheduled for Saturday at Thornton Academy – is preparation.

Still, the Scots weren’t too shabby at the regionals, collecting 88 points for first place in the field of 16 teams. Westbrook (71) had a solid second, ahead of Scarborough (64) and Gorham (63).

Eric Favreau was Bonny Eagle’s sole individual winner on the day, taking first in the 800. The Scots found success in the relays, winning the 4 x 100 and 4 x 800, while taking third in the 4 x 400.

BE’s Allen Cox was second in the race walk, just ahead of teammate Matt Bolton. Ernie Simard took second in the discus, Greg Gadbois was runner-up in the 300 hurdles and Ben Roy was second in the 110 hurdles.

“My 110 times were alright, but they weren’t as fast as I wanted them to be. My head just wasn’t there,” said Roy. “I think we’re a better state team. We can compete with everyone. We just have to all be there. That’s the hardest part is getting everyone’s head in the game.”

Westbrook coach Dave Kahill was pleased with how his team performed. He said he came into the meet with questions about how his athletes would perform in some events and he entered them based on those questions.

“I’ve got some answers now,” he said. “I just don’t know if they’re the right ones.”

Alex Baillargeon won the 400, finished second in the long jump and third in the triple jump for the Blue Blazes, while several teammates had strong finishes, including Robbie Preston (2nd, 200), Dave Quigley (2nd, high jump), John Davis (3rd, pole vault) and Erik Born (4th, 300 hurdles).

Gorham was led by Josh Maxwell – who was runner-up in the 100 and had a trio of third place finishes in the 110 hurdles, 300 hurdles and high jump – as well as Joe Wise (3rd, 100) and Andy Nash (3rd, shot put and 4th discus).

The Lady Rams – like their school’s boys squad, part of the Class A SMAA for the first year after moving up from the Class B WMC – collected 66 points, good for third place behind Scarborough (131) and Thornton Academy (96.5). Bonny Eagle’s girls finished with 12 points, while Westbrook totaled five.

Gorham was led by Leigh Maniscalco, who won the pole vault, placed second in the 300 hurdles and took third in the long jump, and Alyson Fearon, who was third in the 100 and fourth in the 200.

Fearon was thrilled at her finish in the 100, where she set a new personal best and jumped two seed spots. She was also part of the winning 4 x 100 relay team, which shaved a second off their best time.

“The states are going to be nerve-wracking,” Fearon said. “It’s a lot different in Class A because teams are a lot bigger than us. We’re not a big team, but we have a lot of point scorers.”

Freshman Erin Murphy collected Westbrook’s points with a fourth place finish in the long jump and a sixth in the triple jump.
