Special Olympics golfers from across Maine will be hosted Sunday, July 16 at 13 courses for an afternoon of instruction and competition, the sixth year of “Day on the Links.”

Golf for Special Olympians was the invention of Al Biondi, golf professional from Augusta, who died in 2005.

Courses hosting Olympians are Augusta, Bangor Municipal, Brunswick, J.W. Parks, Kebo Valley, Martindale, Presque Isle, Rockland, St. Croix, Sable Oaks, Sugarloaf, Waterville, and York Golf & Tennis.

Al Biondi Special Olympics Maine Golf was officially named soon after Biondi’s death and, according to Mickey Boutilier, president and founder of Special Olympics in Maine, “Suffice it to say that without Al’s support, leadership and determination, there would be no golf program for over 100 special athletes who now enjoy the game of golf.”

Al Biondi, whose colorful career stretched from the 1950s through 2005, was inducted into the Maine Golf Hall of Fame in 1995.
