Five South Portland residents are set to run for longstanding councilor Bob Fickett’s vacant seat on the City Council.

The list of candidates includes a former South Portland mayor, a sports announcer and a longtime council watcher.

Ray Lee, Jim Crocker, Ralph Baxter Sr., Louis Maietta Jr. and Roger Sabourin all filed at least 100 signatures with the city to run for Fickett’s seat by this past Monday’s deadline, said South Portland officials.

The election will be held June 13 and the winner will serve through the end of Fickett’s term in December 2007.

Fickett, a farmer, was a popular councilor, noted for his down home persona. He served on the council for 20 plus years and resigned in April for health reasons.

A candidate’s forum will be held in the City Hall Council Chambers at 25 Cottage Road on May 11 at 6:45 p.m.
