The clouds gathered and a chilly breeze rose Monday, but the rain held off long enough for the final match between the girls tennis teams of Bonny Eagle and Biddeford to be decided. The visiting Tigers took second doubles, and with it the match, 3-2.

The victory pushed Biddeford to 2-2, while the Scots, 0-3, are still searching for their first win. After opening the season against a pair of tough squads in McAuley and Kennebunk, Bonny Eagle played better against the Tigers.

“I think most of the competition from here on will be on par with us,” said Scots coach Tom Carlisle. “I think we have to improve on fundamentals across the board, and on mental toughness. That’s something you develop only when you play matches.”

The hosts took the first and second singles, with Laura Bell topping Tigers number one Debbie Gagnon, 6-3, 6-2, and Emily Larrabee beating Karci Fox, 7-5, 6-2.

“It was a really good match, back and forth,” said Larrabee of her first win of the season. “She is equal in ability to me. In the second set I don’t know if it was a mental thing or she might have gotten tired.”

Biddeford’s Deborah Cassette took the third singles bout, sweeping Katrice Wagner, 6-2, 6-1, and the Tigers first doubles team of Allison Alaimo and Sarah Prejean went 6-0, 6-0 against Karli Kesson and Kim Simonson.

“We didn’t know each other before this year, and we’re trying really hard to get into it,” Alaimo said. “We’re looking pretty good right now, and we’re having a really good time.”

The duo has found success so far, with a 3-1 mark.

“Allison is really good at the net,” said Prejean, “and I’m good at hitting it strong from the back.”

With the match score 2-2, everyone turned their attention to second doubles. The Tigers tandem of Jonna Pothier and Bryanna Rizas were able to handle the home squad’s duo of Sonja Gruchala and Alyssa Heath, 6-2, 6-0.

“The girls are practicing and playing hard,” said Biddeford coach Terry Wilson. “We split several sets so far this season, and they gave it their all.”
